About Broomhouse

With a minimum of two nights stay, we encourage people to take things slowly – you don’t even have to leave Broomhouse, you can spend the day exploring the gardens, reading in the summer house, or enjoying your pre booked treatment from massage to meditation, hypnotherapy, reiki or try a shamanic journey. Perhaps you just want a quiet corner in this adult only centre, a cosy fire, a good book and plenty of tea with no interruptions might be your perfect answer to relax, recuperate and replenish. Sitting in approximately 2 acres of grounds, from lawns to walled garden to small wooded areas, there are lots of quiet hide aways to rest and just be.  Broomhouse has the space to be used for many things. A fabulous firepit with seating for 30 or so, chairs dotted through the grounds, summer houses and bird hides. There is such a lovely feel to the home and grounds, relaxing and welcoming, set back from the A1, surrounded by fields, trees and birdsong, you could be miles from anywhere.

If you wish to venture further afield, there is a walk to the coast from the back door, through a few fields via public by-ways which takes approximately 45 minutes. Packed lunches are available to pre order.

There is storage for bikes, ample parking for cars, and we can dry out walking gear should the weather have caught you out. (To cycle to Broomhouse you will need to be on the A1 from the cycle path for approximately 1 mile)

Back in 2019, my wife and I wanted a quiet spot to get away from it all, and we found Broomhouse Farmhouse to be the perfect retreat, so much so, that we’ve returned time and time again, we also had access to the beautiful reading room. With its open fire and comfy settee and chairs, it’s the perfect spot for a quiet drink after a day spent enjoying the many walks along the Northumbria coast. With access to the grounds and gardens, which again, are ever so peaceful, and it’s great to just spend the afternoon relaxing, and not feeling that you have to go somewhere else.

Well, what can we say about this hidden gem? My wife and I, luckily came across this B&B (much more than a B&B) a few years ago. This is a B&B with a difference!! After about 8 visits we, still get excited about visiting. When you turn off the A1, you’re instantly greeted with a lovely winding country lane, plenty of wildlife can be spotted on this short drive up to the house. You will also have to drive through the big gates, up to the house (love this bit), once through the gates you are now in a magical place!!   The gardens are amazing, and as keen gardeners we love to walk around and take everything in, we could also sit and relax in one of the summer houses.

Ok, let’s enter the house, oh wow!!!  I’ve said this a few times, but as soon as you walk into that house, you can feel all the stress from everyday life, just disappear. I could sit in the upstairs lounge, with the big fireplace, for hours and hours and hours. Also, the sleeps we have in those big rooms with the big beds, with the peace and quiet are just amazing.

I take myself off to Broomhouse Farmhouse in October time every year! What can I say, ‘I love Broomhouse!’ I run my own business and my work is my life, although I enjoy what I do, it is at a very fast pace and stressful. Broomhouse is my indulgence, my annual escape and from the moment I enter the grounds, I begin to relax. It never ceases to amaze me how quickly I wind down amid the tranquillity of the big old house, and a morning walk around the beautiful grounds is just the tonic after a tasty breakfast to set me up for the day. I am made to feel extremely welcome by Bob and Mandy from the minute I arrive, and nothing is too much trouble. I always feel rejuvenated after my stay.

About Broomhouse

The area now known as Broomhouse was part of the Goswick Estate in the early 15th Century owned by Thomas Swinhoe, it is not clear when Broomhouse came into existence. The first mention was in the will of William Swinhoe, son of Thomas, dated 1623 as Broomhouse Manor. Having changed hands and been added to over the centuries it is now owned by Lord and Lady Joicey  of Ford and Etal Estate. Mandy and Robert are the current custodians and want to share it with as many people as they can.
